Flag Concept
A flag concept for the Vancouver, WA city flag design competition. This flag was designed to be monochromatic, utilizing the blue colors present in the city of Vancouver’s branding guidelines to place emphasis on water and the Columbia River’s significance in local life. The geometric pattern that travels the horizontal length of the flag takes inspiration from a variety of relevant themes. Firstly, the zig-zag component is directly pulled from Chinook culture where it is used prominently in art. More loosely, this concept is also influenced by basket weaving which is culturally significant to many local tribes.

Additionally, within this pattern are mountain peaks, wave lines and hidden fish (symbolic of the environment surrounding the city), as well as overlapping “Vs” (a direct homage to Vancouver). The overall pattern shares visual similarities with the structure of the I-5 bridge which connects Vancouver to Portland. It is also fence-like, which draws a connection to Fort Vancouver, a national historical site within the city. And the repeating circle shape paired with the triangular lines imitates the top half of the Salmon Run Bell Tower in Esther Short Park, a resident landmark.

The main intention with this flag was to introduce a unique, but simple design using assets that could be repurposed in different formats (such as merch or promotional material). The main pattern in this concept makes use of a central icon which could easily be isolated or repeated for application as a broader pattern. The design is versatile with abundant symbolism. And the inherent interconnectedness of the pattern provides an overarching theme of togetherness and unification. As a growing city, this focus highlights a strong sense of community which Vancouver was built on and should continue to foster.
